This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.
• Perform quality assessments of outpatient coding.
• Ensure compliance with federal coding regulations.
• Keep current with coding guidelines and updates to coding policies.
• Analyze, interpret, and assign diagnostic and procedural codes based on medical documentation.
• Implement accurate coding principles.
• Address coding edits and manage complex outpatient cases.
• Aid in the mentoring and training of new coders regarding workflows and applications.
• Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Uphold and support the policies, protocols, and values of UT Health San Antonio.
• Operate under the general supervision of the Coding Operations Manager in a hospital environment.
• A minimum of five (5) years of experience in medical records abstraction and coding within an acute care setting is required.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Familiarity with Official Guidelines for coding and reporting.
• Understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
• Knowledge of disease pathology.
• Proficiency in Current Procedural Terminology coding (CPT), ICD-10-CM, and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
• Capability to code surgical and observation patient encounters.
• Competence in operating standard business equipment such as computers, keyboards, and telephones.
• Proficient in navigating common office software, coding software, billing software, and abstracting systems.
• Proven ability to utilize coding resources effectively.
• Skill in troubleshooting basic technical issues.
• Preferred experience in a hospital setting with Infusion, Surgery, Observation Surgery, Surgical Spine competencies, Interventional experience, and back-end edit resolution.
• Preferred familiarity with EPIC and 3M encoder software.
