Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Economist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and implement machine learning solutions to address economic challenges within Instacart's intricate marketplace.

• Work closely with product managers, data scientists, and engineers to grasp business requirements and create effective solutions.

• Enhance and evolve algorithms and models to boost operational efficiency.

• Disseminate insights, best practices, and research across various domains within the Economics team.

• Utilize economic theory, econometrics, and machine learning to tackle marketplace issues such as incentives, pricing, product placement, matching, logistics, advertising, uplift, long-term value modeling, and causal inference.

⛳️ Requirements

• Graduate degree (Masters or PhD) in Economics or a closely related discipline.

• Proven experience in applying causal inference methodologies to both observational and experimental datasets.

• Solid understanding of machine learning algorithms and techniques.

• Proficient in Python programming.

• Strong command of SQL and Pandas for data manipulation tasks.

• Familiarity with machine learning tools such as scikit-learn and XGBoost.

• Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.

• Self-driven with a strong sense of ownership.

• For Senior Machine Learning Engineer I, Economist positions: 1–3 years of relevant industry experience.

• For Senior Machine Learning Engineer I, Economist positions: experience in deploying machine learning models in production settings.

• For Senior Machine Learning Engineer I, Economist positions: experience with cloud computing and associated ML infrastructure.

• Preferred: PhD in Economics or a closely related field with a focus on data-intensive problems.

• Preferred: internship experience in relevant roles.

• Preferred: experience with large language models and generative AI.

• Preferred: background in uplift modeling, contextual bandits, and/or heterogeneous treatment effect estimation.
