Senior Legal Counsel – IP, AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ukraine.

📋 Description

• Take charge of Welltech's global intellectual property portfolio—trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and patents—overseeing registration, maintenance, and enforcement strategies in key markets (US, EU, UK).

• Act as the primary contact for IP disputes and infringement issues: evaluate cease-and-desist letters, liaise with external IP counsel, and formulate a comprehensive response strategy.

• Perform IP clearance assessments for new product features, creative materials, app store submissions, and marketing initiatives.

• Provide guidance on copyright protection for proprietary content (exercise programs, wellness material, onboarding processes) and evaluate compilation copyright and originality criteria.

• Develop and sustain internal IP playbooks, training resources, and triage frameworks to empower the broader team in early identification and escalation of IP risks.

• Oversee relationships with external IP counsel and manage expenditures efficiently, favoring internal solutions where feasible.

• Function as a subject matter expert on emerging AI regulations—EU AI Act, GDPR Article 22, US state-level AI legislation, and sector-specific guidance for health and wellness applications.

• Conduct legal reviews for AI-driven product features, including personalization engines, recommendation algorithms, dynamic pricing systems, and generative AI tools.

• Advise on data minimization, transparency, and non-discrimination obligations relevant to algorithmic systems that may handle sensitive health or demographic information.

• Collaborate with Privacy Counsel on Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) requirements for AI projects, particularly where AI is applied in data-driven acquisition, segmentation, or onboarding.

• Monitor and interpret regulatory developments (EU AI Act implementation, FTC guidance, UK DSIT AI frameworks) into actionable internal guidance and scalable compliance processes.

• Assist in due diligence for third-party AI vendors, large language model integrations, and model licensing agreements.

• Partner with Marketing, Product, Growth, and Engineering teams to integrate legal review into feature development processes from initial design to launch.

• Provide counsel on licensing and content partnership agreements where IP or AI rights are concerned.

• Contribute to the legal team's strategy and resource allocation, including determining when to engage outside counsel versus handling matters in-house.

⛳️ Requirements

• Licensed attorney with over 5 years of post-qualification experience in IP and/or technology law, with significant exposure to AI governance or digital product-related work.

• Extensive understanding of EU and US IP regulations (trademark, copyright, trade secrets); experience in patent prosecution is advantageous but not essential.

• Proven experience in advising on AI-related legal matters - including EU AI Act risk classification, algorithmic transparency, automated decision-making, or similar issues.

• A history of managing IP disputes and litigation risks, including cease-and-desist response strategies and enforcement decisions.

• Experience in a digital consumer product organization; a background in app-based businesses, ad tech, or health/wellness is a strong plus.

• Proficient in operating within limited resources and external counsel budgets: pragmatic, solution-focused, and skilled at differentiating between material risks and less significant issues.

• Excellent cross-functional collaboration capabilities; able to translate complex legal analyses into actionable and proportionate guidance for product and engineering stakeholders.

• Fluent in English; proficiency in another European language is beneficial.
