Senior Legal Counsel, Business Operations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Serve as the primary contact for the Canva People team regarding all matters related to Product & Privacy and AI governance.

• Act as the first point of contact for the Infrastructure and Platform teams.

• Keep an eye on the regulatory environment to identify relevant laws and standards affecting the areas you oversee, including employee monitoring, high-risk and prohibited AI in recruitment and employment decisions, and data sovereignty guidance.

• Assist business stakeholders, product lawyers, product managers, and engineers in assessing the implications of privacy laws and strategically adapting to changes.

• Provide advice on Privacy Impact Assessments and address other privacy-related inquiries from the People, Infrastructure, and Platform teams.

• Contribute to Canva-wide privacy and legal training and awareness initiatives.

• Collaborate with the broader legal team to ensure that the terms of use and internal policies and standards are up to date.

• Help redefine the role of in-house counsel by developing tools and processes for ongoing growth and success.

⛳️ Requirements

• Legally qualified with an AUS practising certificate.

• A minimum of 8 years of legal practice, including some experience working in-house.

• Proven experience in advising on intricate privacy matters related to data residency, sensitive personal data, and compliance obligations to privacy regulators.

• Significant experience working for or with a rapidly expanding business, preferably within the SaaS sector, where you have directly guided the organization on global privacy compliance.

• Experience in advising on personal data incidents.

• Background in developing and delivering privacy training programs.

• Previous experience working with AI and leveraging it to enhance efficiency in your work.

• CIPP/E certification.
