This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Work collaboratively with Product, Compliance, and Operations teams to design and launch new products, converting complex legal and regulatory requirements into actionable solutions.
• Provide guidance on a broad spectrum of legal and regulatory issues concerning securities, AML/CFT, payments, consumer protection, and other aspects impacting Shakepay’s operations.
• Take the lead on regulatory initiatives, including conducting reviews, audits, licensing tasks, policy development, and engagement with regulatory bodies.
• Offer practical, business-oriented legal counsel to business leaders, assisting teams in navigating ambiguity and making informed decisions while considering legal, regulatory, and operational factors.
• Spot opportunities to utilize AI, automation, and scalable processes to enhance the efficiency of legal work and support the company’s rapid growth.
• Assist the team with a variety of other legal issues as required, such as commercial agreements, corporate governance, employment matters, and strategic projects.
• Licensed attorney in Canada with over 5 years of in-house experience, preferably in fintech, payments, financial services, cryptocurrency, or a rapidly growing technology firm.
• Capable of working autonomously within a small team, making decisions with incomplete information, and advancing work without excessive oversight.
• Possess business-oriented legal judgment: you begin with the product or business outcome and guide the team in understanding risks, options, and recommended courses of action.
• Comfortable providing direct advice to product and operations teams, including on ambiguous matters where there may not be a definitive answer.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the capability to simplify complex legal issues into clear, actionable advice for non-legal stakeholders.
