Senior Instrument Scientist, Simulation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +25 more states.

📋 Description

• Create and sustain comprehensive simulations for instrument performance that encompass optical, detector, and scanner physics, culminating in projected on-orbit capabilities.

• Develop and uphold virtual instrument models and digital twin versions of on-orbit hardware, ensuring alignment with actual performance metrics.

• Specify flight software inputs for operational modes, sensor data acquisition, and scanner management based on simulation outcomes.

• Assist in monitoring on-orbit performance and investigating anomalies, integrating insights gained into simulation models.

• Engage in a 24/7 on-call rotation for resolving on-orbit anomalies, approximately one week every six weeks.

• Convert physics into orbital capabilities from inception through to end-of-life considerations.

• Take ownership of simulation and modeling that connects optical, detector, and scanner physics to on-orbit performance.

• Lead efforts in predicting instrument performance.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in engineering, physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• Over 5 years of experience in coding and simulating performance for imaging systems, remote sensing instruments, or similar electro-optical devices.

• Proven experience in creating instrument performance models or simulations, including radiometric, geometric, optical, or systems-level analyses.

• Proficiency in software development using one or more programming languages, such as Python, Julia, or C++.

• Experience in writing code that is relied upon by others, ensuring it is tested, reviewed, and maintained within a shared codebase.

• Excellent communication skills.

• Ability to effectively translate performance predictions into requirements and trade studies involving Instrument Systems, Flight Software, and Mission Systems teams.

• Must comply with applicable ITAR/EAR export-control access regulations as a U.S. person, eligible without export authorization, or likely to obtain export authorization.
