This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Design and develop backend services that support financial workflows and transaction processing using Java and contemporary JVM frameworks.
• Take ownership of features from start to finish — including data model, service, API, and the Angular frontend that utilizes them.
• Create and maintain APIs that are utilized by internal services, external integrations, and our own frontend applications.
• Engage in architectural discussions and enhance service-oriented, event-driven systems.
• Enhance system reliability, performance, and observability throughout the entire technology stack.
• Refactor and update legacy systems as the platform progresses.
• Diagnose production issues and implement enduring solutions.
• Collaborate with product and design teams to translate requirements into functional, well-tested features.
• Participate in code reviews and promote high engineering standards.
• Utilize AI-driven development tools, such as Claude, to expedite software design, implementation, testing, debugging, documentation, and code review.
• Exercise strong engineering judgment when evaluating AI-generated solutions, ensuring their correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and compliance with set architectural standards.
• Employ AI to navigate unfamiliar codebases, investigate defects, assess implementation options, and identify potential edge cases or system impacts.
• Use AI tools responsibly, ensuring that proprietary data, customer information, credentials, and other sensitive materials are managed in line with company security protocols.
• Share effective AI workflows, reusable prompts, and best practices that enhance engineering productivity and quality across the team, while also evaluating emerging AI development tools that may be beneficial to adopt.
• Over 5 years of experience as a backend engineer in a production setting.
• Extensive experience in building backend services utilizing Java and modern JVM frameworks.
• Proven experience in designing APIs and service-oriented systems.
• Experience with relational databases and large datasets.
• Familiarity with distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
• Working knowledge of a modern reactive frontend framework (Angular preferred; experience with Vue or React is also welcome) and TypeScript.
• Understanding of containerized environments such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Practical experience with AI coding assistants (Claude, Copilot, Cursor, or similar) as part of your daily workflow.
• Strong discernment regarding when to depend on AI tools and when human review is critical — especially concerning security, data management, and financial workflows.
• Highly self-sufficient — capable of resolving challenges independently, making sound technical decisions without supervision, and leading initiatives from start to finish.
• Excellent debugging, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Experience in regulated industries, such as financial services or cannabis, is considered a plus.
