This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Design, develop, and deploy features from start to finish, covering data model and API design all the way to frontend implementation.
• Create and construct robust, scalable APIs using TypeScript and Node.js, published in OpenAPI format.
• Architect resilient distributed systems and third-party integrations, ensuring effective error handling, failure mode mitigation, and transaction control.
• Engage with FHIR R4 resources and clinical data models within Medplum.
• Contribute to the frontend transition from Flutter to React.
• Make decisions on build versus buy and identify non-differentiated capabilities.
• Take ownership of testing and contribute to QA and DevOps efforts.
• Ensure that development practices comply with medical-device regulatory standards.
• Draft clear specifications that can be implemented by AI agents and verified by engineers.
• Factor in verification, failure modes, risk-based reviews, monitoring, alerting, incident response, and automated pre-release verification.
• Assist in determining when agent-authored changes can be deployed directly to production.
• Establish standards and define engineering practices for AI-assisted development.
• Approximately 6+ years of experience in building software from start to finish, preferably in TypeScript, Node.js, and React; adjacent stacks will be considered if the fundamentals are solid.
• Significant experience in system design and architecture with production systems.
• Practical experience with distributed systems and third-party integrations, including authentication, webhooks, rate limits, retry strategies, fault tolerance, and transaction management.
• Strong testing skills and practices.
• Experience utilizing AI coding agents in production work, along with a well-informed perspective on their strengths and limitations.
• Experience working in a small team with incomplete requirements.
• Ability to articulate precise system descriptions and specifications.
• Clear and confident communication skills in a fully remote environment.
• Capability to work independently and collaboratively.
• A drive to create products that positively impact people.
• Experience in regulated industries such as healthcare or finance.
• Familiarity with FHIR R4 or other healthcare data standards and platforms like Medplum.
• Experience with AWS infrastructure.
• Some exposure to Flutter.
• Experience in startups, scale-ups, or as a founding engineer is beneficial.
• A keen interest in software craftsmanship through writing, open-source contributions, or community involvement is desirable.
