Senior Engineering Manager, Web Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead a small, experienced team of five frontend engineers

• Own the vision and strategy for how Headway develops its user interface

• Establish the strategy for the Helix design system and web architecture

• Act as the representative for frontend engineering throughout the organization

• Collaborate with Design and Engineering Foundations leadership to set the roadmap

• Showcase the value of platform initiatives using clear metrics

• Remain engaged with the code by submitting pull requests, reviewing and modifying code with AI tools, and tackling minor tasks

• Recruit top talent, nurture team members, and manage underperformance

• Empower senior engineers with ownership of technical direction

• Articulate frontend strategy to engineers, designers, and executives

• Collaborate with Design leadership to evolve Helix

• Manage frameworks, tools, and standards for accessibility, performance, testing, and maintainability across Headway's web applications

• Equip AI agents with skills, documentation, and guidelines for frontend development

• Create automated checks and agent reviews for frontend code

• Expand Headway’s frontend guild

• Collect product engineering feedback and integrate it into the roadmap

• Prioritize upcoming work, support requests, and new initiatives

• Advocate for suitable frontend team staffing

• Engage in recruitment screenings, leadership interviews, product sense interviews, and frontend technical interviews

⛳️ Requirements

• Background in senior or staff frontend engineering prior to transitioning into management

• Extensive experience with React and contemporary web technologies

• Proven track record in leading a frontend platform, design system, or web architecture team

• At least 3 years of experience managing engineers

• Proven experience in hiring, developing senior engineers, and managing performance, including addressing underperformance

• Recent experience in deploying code using AI tools within the last six months

• A well-defined perspective on modern frontend engineering and the ability to advocate with data

• Capacity to communicate the value of platform work to product teams and executives

• Experience in closely collaborating with Design and translating design system decisions into engineering strategies

• Proven experience in aligning multiple product teams with competing priorities

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with timelines measured in weeks or a few months

• Familiarity with TypeScript, React, React Router 7, Vite, Tailwind CSS, Helix, Datadog, PagerDuty, Sentry, GitHub, Cursor, Claude, Gemini, and Eddy

• Knowledge of accessibility standards including WCAG 2.1 AA
