Senior Engineering Manager – Mobile

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Lead, mentor, and nurture the development of staff and senior engineers, cultivating a culture of accountability, innovation, and ongoing improvement.

• Oversee the complete technical implementation of intricate features — from architecture and design through deployment and iteration — while proactively addressing edge cases, testing, and operational issues.

• Collaborate with the client platform team to define and enhance shared standards, best practices, and UI libraries throughout the organization — balancing your product team's priorities with contributions to the shared platform.

• Provide architectural guidance for Kotlin/Java services developed with Spring Boot, ensuring adherence to engineering best practices and early anticipation of integration points and dependencies.

• Establish and monitor engineering objectives related to availability, performance, quality, and delivery cadence — ensuring teams are accountable for results.

• Attract, retain, and scale exceptional engineering talent through strategic hiring, mentorship, and an inclusive team culture.

• Facilitate multi-team planning and design discussions, presenting innovative solutions to technical challenges and promoting best practices across platform boundaries without relying on formal authority.

• Champion engineering initiatives at the executive level, influencing technology strategy and investments in distributed systems and mobile infrastructure — translating complex multi-platform decisions into relatable terms for product and executive audiences.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 10 years of software engineering experience, including over 2 years managing mobile engineering teams.

• A demonstrated history of building highly scalable, consumer-facing Android applications using MVI architecture, with a profound understanding of unidirectional data flow and state immutability at scale.

• Expert-level proficiency in Kotlin — including coroutines, flows (with distinctions between Flow and SharedFlow), custom scopes, and thread dispatchers — along with the ability to mentor others in its effective application.

• Extensive experience with reactive programming patterns and asynchronous data processing, including real-time data handling via WebSockets, gRPC, and Ktor for networking.

• Background in designing offline-first data synchronization layers (e.g., SQLDelight), with knowledge of schema migrations, eventual consistency, and how distributed/async backend states surface through MVI to the end user.

• Proficient in Gradle build systems at scale, including multi-module projects, convention plugins, remote build caching, dependency substitution, and custom plugin development.

• Experience in designing CI/CD pipelines that validate KMP changes across both Android and iOS builds, including strategies to identify shared module issues before they affect native builds.

• Practical experience with Jetpack Compose — focusing on recomposition optimization, stability annotations, and state hoisting — as well as familiarity with the trade-offs of Compose Multiplatform.

• In-depth knowledge of the Android platform — including best practices, trends, and end-user considerations — with awareness of iOS conventions sufficient to ensure KMP modules are idiomatic for both platforms.

• Proven ability to lead multi-team initiatives and scale engineering organizations through rapid growth phases, fostering cross-team alignment and addressing skepticism from platform peers.

• Expertise in Agile/Scrum methodologies, with a history of driving process improvements and effective communication across engineering, product, design, and executive stakeholders.

• Nice to Have: Production experience with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP), including shipped features — not just exploration. Familiarity with expect/actual patterns, interface injection, iOS interoperability, and the organizational challenges of cross-platform adoption.
