Senior Engineering Manager, AI Product – Thunderbolt

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee engineering execution by defining priorities, ownership, timelines, risks, dependencies, and quality standards.

• Supervise engineers and contractors, encompassing coaching, providing feedback, setting priorities, supporting performance, and fostering team development.

• Remain engaged with the codebase by writing code, reviewing technical contributions, assessing tradeoffs, and assisting the team in maintaining both momentum and quality.

• Collaborate with technical and product leadership to translate product direction, AI strategy, user experience objectives, and technical priorities into synchronized engineering plans.

• Implement planning, review, release, and follow-through practices that enhance predictability and mitigate bottlenecks.

• Uphold high standards for code quality, testing, documentation, reliability, security awareness, maintainability, and readiness for release.

• Develop a solid understanding of product and architectural context across AI-enabled workflows, integrations, local-first or customer-controlled architectures, and release requirements.

• Work in partnership with product, design, enterprise-facing teams, and technical leadership to balance speed, user experience, privacy, quality, enterprise readiness, and long-term sustainability.

• Direct hiring, onboarding, and resource planning as the Thunderbolt engineering team expands.

• Assist Thunderbolt in transitioning from an incubation-stage product to a dependable, enterprise-ready open-source AI solution.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 15 years of professional software development experience, including substantial involvement in senior engineering leadership or complex product delivery roles.

• More than 5 years of experience managing technical teams, including senior engineers or senior individual contributors.

• Proven history of leading a team that successfully delivered polished, high-quality products that meet genuine standards of craftsmanship.

• Strong capability to convert ambiguous product and technical directions into clear plans, ownership models, and delivery momentum.

• Technical proficiency with AI-enabled products, including the ability to assess tradeoffs in areas such as LLM applications, RAG workflows, agents, enterprise search, automation, on-device AI, or AI evaluation.

• Demonstrated experience in delivering complex applications across various platforms, such as desktop, web, and mobile, utilizing technologies like Tauri, Electron, React Native, or similar frameworks.

• Experience with enterprise software, regulated environments, or similarly intricate technical products, including security, privacy, compliance readiness, administration, integrations, and customer-controlled deployment models.

• Practical experience with local-first, offline-capable, self-hosted, hybrid, on-premise, air-gapped, or other customer-controlled product architectures, including tradeoffs related to data storage, synchronization, privacy, reliability, and user experience.

• Experience enhancing engineering practices pertaining to technical planning, code review, release readiness, testing, documentation, CI/CD, maintainability, or management of technical debt.

• Excellent communication abilities regarding technical prioritization, release risks, ownership, quality expectations, and tradeoffs.
