This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Japan.
• Create innovative technical analyses to influence policies, shape narratives, and alter political discussions in Japan.
• Focus on the transition of the power sector, electrification, flexibility of power systems, transmission and distribution networks, interconnections, offshore grids, and energy market reforms.
• Design and produce engaging reports grounded in comprehensive data analysis.
• Gather and analyze research data while collaborating with Ember’s data team.
• Develop methodologies and models that support the analysis process.
• Act as a trusted representative and spokesperson for Ember in Japan.
• Address media inquiries and present research results at various events.
• Establish and maintain influential networks with external stakeholders and experts.
• Identify collaborative opportunities and enhance impact on policy discussions.
• Strengthen Ember’s reputation as a respected energy policy think tank in Asia through research and advocacy primarily focused on Japan.
• Collaborate with colleagues in the Asia policy team to assess team strategies and objectives.
• Integrate analytical delivery with assistance from current analysts while the broader Japan team is being recruited.
• Work closely with the Partnership and Engagement Manager on outreach to stakeholders.
• At least 5 years of experience in a research or analytical role within the energy transition sector in Japan.
• A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in business, academia, government, multilateral development banks, or the non-profit sector.
• Strong technical understanding of Japan's electricity sector, energy policy framework, and sector challenges.
• Advanced analytical skills, including data analysis and visualization expertise.
• Outstanding communication and writing abilities, evidenced by publications, presentations, and media engagements.
• Politically insightful and comfortable publicly representing an organization’s work with government, business, and media audiences.
• An established network that spans government, non-profit organizations, business, and media sectors.
• Capability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines with minimal guidance while working remotely.
• Proficiency in both English and Japanese.
• Nine-day fortnight, with every other Friday off work at full pay.
• A minimum of 25 days of holiday, in addition to public holidays.
• An extra day of holiday for each year at Ember, up to a maximum of 5 additional days.
