This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Act as the chief legal advisor for the People team on matters including hiring, performance management, corrective actions, terminations, reductions in force, accommodations, leaves, compensation, contingent workers, and sensitive employee issues.
• Manage employment disputes, encompassing pre-litigation claims, demand letters, EEOC and state agency charges, settlement negotiations, and coordination with outside counsel.
• Oversee and provide guidance on internal employment investigations related to harassment, discrimination, retaliation, whistleblower issues, and policy violations.
• Offer proactive legal counsel on employment law compliance across multiple states, particularly for non-exempt employee groups.
• Keep abreast of federal, state, and local legal changes and implement preventive measures.
• Provide advice on employee and HR data privacy as well as information security matters.
• Draft, review, and negotiate various legal documents including offer letters, employment agreements, separation and severance agreements, CIIAAs, and equity-related contracts.
• Convert legal and regulatory updates into actionable guidance.
• Create and uphold employment policies, handbooks, and compliance protocols.
• Design and conduct employment law training for the People team, team leaders, and business stakeholders.
• Acquire knowledge and take responsibility for related legal areas such as privacy, information security, non-employment litigation, regulatory investigations, ERISA and benefits, commercial contracts, and marketing and advertising compliance.
• Assist with regulatory inquiries and examinations.
• Provide counsel on customer, product, and vendor data privacy and information security issues.
• Support ongoing litigation and disputes, including coordination with outside counsel, document management, and internal communication.
• Review marketing and advertising materials to ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
• Draft and negotiate commercial agreements while offering general contract support.
• Report directly to the Assistant General Counsel, Product & Regulatory.
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
• Active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction is mandatory.
• 8 to 10+ years of legal experience is required.
• Extensive and focused experience in employment law, encompassing both counseling and dispute resolution.
• Proven depth in counseling for non-exempt employee groups.
• Experience in managing employment litigation and pre-litigation scenarios, directing outside counsel, and formulating strategies for resolution.
• In-depth knowledge of California employment law is essential.
• Familiarity with equity compensation and executive compensation is necessary.
• Previous experience in at least one in-house legal position is highly preferred.
• Experience in a startup or rapidly growing technology company is a significant advantage.
• Background in a law firm is preferred.
• Ability to transform analytical insights into actionable, business-oriented advice.
• Comfort in advising non-legal stakeholders, including the People team, senior executives, and business leaders.
• Capacity to operate independently, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions in a dynamic and ambiguous environment.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Strong familiarity with AI tools and their daily application in legal research, drafting, analysis, and problem-solving.
• Ability to create AI workflows and, when applicable, agents.
• Skill in evaluating and thoughtfully applying new AI capabilities while maintaining quality and managing risk.
• Ability to articulate the strengths and limitations of AI in legal contexts and assist others in developing AI literacy.
