This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North America.
• Uphold and enhance Home Assistant OS support for Nabu Casa hardware platforms, contributing appropriately within the broader Home Assistant OS ecosystem.
• Collaborate closely with Home Assistant OS contributors and Open Home Foundation developers to advance platform support, troubleshoot issues, and facilitate new hardware platforms.
• Assist in board bring-up activities for new hardware products, including Buildroot configuration, board support packages (BSPs), bootloader setup, partition layouts, and system services.
• Optimize operating system performance, hardware utilization, stability, and reliability across supported devices.
• Sustain and enhance the Buildroot-based build infrastructure, ensuring builds remain reproducible, maintainable, and efficient.
• Investigate and resolve platform-level challenges such as boot regressions, driver failures, hardware compatibility issues, update problems, kernel panics, and power-management defects.
• Work closely with the Hardware Team during the development and validation of new boards. The Hardware Team is responsible for hardware design and production; you ensure reliable operating system support and compatibility.
• Upstream patches as necessary to Linux, U-Boot, Buildroot, or other relevant open-source projects.
• Collaborate with silicon vendors, hardware partners, and open-source maintainers as needed to enhance platform support and address lower-level issues.
• Contribute to the hardening of operating system security and improvements in platform reliability.
• Assist in maintaining robust CI pipelines for operating system builds and platform validation.
• Document platform architecture, board support status, debugging methods, known limitations, and significant technical decisions.
• Extensive experience with embedded Linux, including Buildroot, Yocto, or similar embedded operating system environments.
• Profound understanding of Linux operating systems, system services, hardware bring-up, and platform reliability.
• Familiarity with bootloaders, partition layouts, OTA update systems, and embedded device lifecycle management.
• Comfort in navigating both hardware and software domains, including the ability to read hardware schematics and datasheets.
• Experience with cross-compilation toolchains and low-level debugging tools such as serial consoles, GDB, strace, JTAG, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
• Proficient in reading and writing C/C++ for lower-level or driver-related tasks.
• Strong Python skills for automation, tooling, and platform scripting.
• Knowledge of security hardening practices for embedded operating systems.
• Experience with Home Assistant OS or similar embedded Linux platforms is a significant advantage.
• Five weeks (twenty-five days) of paid time off.
