Senior Electrical Substation Design Project Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Oversee and manage all technical components of AC power substation projects.

• Execute physical design for substations, collaborating with protection and control, civil, and other engineering teams.

• Specify and apply substation equipment as required.

• Lead technical teams and contractors while liaising with vendors and clients.

• Act as the primary technical authority for scheduling, adherence to standards, value engineering, design review planning, engineering-hours budgeting, and quality assurance/control.

• Create and supervise power single-line diagrams and equipment specifications.

• Generate general arrangement drawings for substations, including layouts, elevations, grounding, conduit/trench, cable routing, detail drawings, and control building layouts.

• Design high-voltage bus systems, structures, equipment, and wiring configurations.

• Prepare comprehensive bills of materials.

• Conduct associated studies and calculations.

• Serve as the main point of contact for technical inquiries among customers, vendors, project managers, and engineering teams.

• Guide and support engineers and designers to fulfill technical specifications, budgets, and timelines.

• Promote interdisciplinary collaboration for cohesive substation solutions.

• Review and contribute to deliverables throughout the inquiry-to-order process.

• Prepare conceptual engineering proposals and documentation.

• Assist in sourcing, vendor quotation assessments, technical clarifications, and assumptions.

• Lead specifications for high-voltage equipment and contractor work scopes.

• Facilitate vendor engagement and equipment selection processes.

• Manage subcontracted design work scopes as necessary.

• Assist the manager in enhancing team productivity and billable utilization.

• Ensure engineering outputs align with customer critical-to-quality requirements and are delivered punctually and within budget.

• Provide support for commissioning and act as a liaison between customers and project stakeholders.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.

• At least 8 years of experience in industrial or utility HV/EHV substation design, or 6 years with a Master’s degree and relevant HV/EHV substation design experience.

• Willingness and ability to travel up to 20%, including internationally.

• Over 10 years of experience is preferred.

• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in good standing in the U.S., with the capability to obtain licensure in other states preferred.

• Familiarity with North American electric utility substation design standards.

• Expertise in transmission and distribution substation engineering.

• Proficient in primary outdoor substation design, calculations, and electrical protection.

• Experience in industrial power system design at voltages of 12.5 kV and above.

• Skilled in battery sizing, DC system design, and AC auxiliary power calculations.

• Experienced in selecting power transformers and circuit breakers.

• Knowledgeable in conductor sizing and application.

• Proficient in grounding, lightning protection, and insulation coordination.

• Understanding of IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards.

• Field-testing and commissioning expertise with a strong focus on safety.

• Strong troubleshooting skills in both electrical and mechanical domains.

• Excellent customer-facing communication skills and commercial awareness.

• Proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and design automation tools.

• Legally authorized to work in the United States.
