Senior Director, Sound Design

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Establish and drive a global sound direction and creative vision that is in alignment with PlayStation Studios.

• Collaborate directly with executive and senior leadership to ensure sound strategy aligns with the overall objectives of PlayStation Studios.

• Work alongside Studio and Audio Directors to maintain sound quality across studios, ensuring a world-class level of consistency.

• Define and advocate for long-term initiatives that promote creative and technical excellence on a global scale.

• Implement audio best practices across all titles within PlayStation Studios.

• Lead research and development projects in collaboration with internal teams, hardware partners, and external vendors.

• Oversee implementation pipelines and elevate overall sound quality and performance standards.

• Present recommendations for innovation and technology to executive leadership.

• Collaborate with various technology groups to outline and direct the global sound technical roadmap for PlayStation Studios.

• Direct investments in new tools and technologies that impact audio creation and delivery.

• Develop innovative methods for tracking, analyzing, and enhancing audio production workflows.

• Ensure all sound content meets or surpasses the quality standards set by PlayStation Studios.

• Maintain strong global relationships with external recording and production partners.

• Oversee the standards and processes for audio acquisition and recording at PlayStation Studios.

• Lead global communication initiatives for the sound department.

• Represent PlayStation Studios' sound innovations at conferences, through PR efforts, and in industry forums.

• Partner with leadership to ensure consistent and transparent communication across regions.

• Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among all sound teams and development partners.

• Monitor and forecast global sound team resources, staffing, and budgets to ensure the organization is sustainable and ready for the future.

• Translate executive decisions into actionable plans at the regional or studio level.

• Collaborate to enhance production processes, improve efficiency, and strengthen coordination across studios.

• Oversee budgeting, scheduling, and headcount allocation globally to maintain a responsive and efficient organization.

• Lead global sound innovation initiatives and encourage creative experimentation.

• Regularly benchmark and research emerging industry practices and technologies.

• Promote risk-taking and creative excellence within the sound and technology teams.

• Oversee headcount planning and talent strategy for the global sound department.

• Participate in senior recruiting and key leadership interviews.

• Define global workforce and succession plans for the sound function.

• Cultivate a culture of performance, development, and mentorship throughout the organization.

• Serve as a role model for coaching, feedback, and professional growth.

⛳️ Requirements

• 15+ years of audio leadership experience in AAA game development.

• A minimum of 6 shipped AAA games in a senior sound leadership role.

• A proven track record of managing, mentoring, and motivating high-performing sound teams.

• Deep expertise in interactive audio, post-production, and advanced authoring tools (Wwise, FMOD, or proprietary engines).

• Strong understanding of multidisciplinary development workflows (animation, level design, AI, physics, mechanics).

• Exceptional executive communication, presentation, and organizational leadership abilities.

• A history of delivering innovative, high-quality sound experiences under tight deadlines.

• A collaborative, visionary leader passionate about pushing audio boundaries in gaming.
