This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Serve as a senior individual contributor supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs RISE program.
• Lead engineering and partner teams in the integration with the Amazon MSK (Kafka) event bus from the design phase to production cutover.
• Contribute to the design, review, and governance of schemas for both producers and consumers.
• Define and document integration patterns, onboarding guides, and criteria for production readiness.
• Facilitate cross-team and cross-program integration efforts.
• Develop and uphold secure, automated CI/CD pipelines that include security scanning, testing, and compliance checks.
• Advocate for secrets management, dependency and container scanning, least-privilege access, and auditable deployments.
• Ensure that delivery practices adhere to VA security and compliance standards.
• Manage and enhance AWS infrastructure that supports the event bus and related services using Terraform.
• Share responsibilities for MSK cluster operations, including capacity planning, topic and partition strategies, scaling, upgrades, and cost efficiency.
• Automate deployment, configuration management, and release processes.
• Ensure that streaming infrastructure and integrations include metrics, logging, alerting, and tracing capabilities.
• Provide support for production operations, incident response, root cause analysis, and post-incident reviews.
• Assist teams in designing resilient and replayable producers and consumers that handle failures gracefully.
• Collaborate with product owners, engineering leads, and VA stakeholders to execute integration tasks.
• Mentor engineers in event-driven architecture and DevSecOps methodologies.
• Enhance onboarding processes, schema governance, pipeline security, reliability, observability, and incident response practices.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent professional experience).
• Over 8 years of experience in DevOps, DevSecOps, Cloud Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, or Platform Engineering.
• Hands-on production experience with Amazon MSK and/or Apache Kafka, specifically in cluster operations, topic and partition design, schema management, and producer/consumer development or tuning; required.
• Experience in designing or supporting event-driven architectures at an enterprise level.
• Proven success in guiding technical efforts that span multiple teams.
• Extensive experience with AWS cloud services; GovCloud experience is preferred.
• Practical experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
• Proficient in designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for enterprise applications.
• Experience in supporting high-availability, mission-critical production environments.
• Strong understanding of DevSecOps principles and secure software delivery practices.
• Experience working in Agile software development settings.
• Knowledge of Schema Registry, Kafka Connect, or similar technologies.
• Familiarity with CI/CD platforms such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or equivalent solutions.
• Experience with Docker and containerization technologies.
• Preferred experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration platforms.
• Proficient in Linux administration.
• Experience with performance monitoring and observability tools.
• Familiarity with Git source control.
• Scripting experience in Python, Bash, or similar languages.
• Experience utilizing AI-assisted development and operational tools.
• Knowledge of AI-driven observability, incident management, and cloud optimization solutions.
• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust suitability determination.
• Active Public Trust or a recently completed Federal background investigation is strongly preferred.
• Preferred experience includes Federal agency, VA, shared Kafka/MSK platform, schema governance, Federal DevSecOps, ATO/RMF, VA platform, multi-vendor, FISMA Moderate-to-High, and relevant cloud certifications.
