Senior Data Scientist, NLP – Applied AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Jersey.

📋 Description

• Design and develop NLP enrichment pipelines that extract entities, classifications, claims, and summaries from scientific full text on a large scale.

• Evaluate traditional NLP methods, embedding-based retrieval, LLM prompting, and fine-tuned smaller models.

• Choose methodologies based on assessment, cost, and operational considerations.

• Collaborate with SMEs and vendors to create golden evaluation sets.

• Determine evaluation metrics while balancing speed, quality, and cost.

• Contribute to agentic AI applications that reason over enriched scientific corpora.

• Assist agents in grounding and justifying their responses.

• Collaborate directly with editors, product managers, and engineers.

• Incorporate modeling insights into product decisions.

• Transform stakeholder feedback into actionable modeling tasks.

• Take ownership of models, evaluations, code, production changes, and results throughout the entire process.

⛳️ Requirements

• Solid NLP expertise in contemporary approaches including LLMs, transformers, embeddings, and retrieval techniques.

• Strong foundation in classical NLP methods such as NER, classification, and sequence labeling.

• Proven experience in constructing evaluations and learning from their outcomes.

• Proficient in writing clean Python code.

• Comfortable working with exploratory notebooks and production repositories.

• Ability to assess various modeling strategies and select the most suitable one based on evaluation, cost, and operational trade-offs.

• Preferred: Experience with scientific or scholarly texts.

• Preferred: Familiarity with AWS services, including S3, Batch, Lambda, and SageMaker.

• Preferred: Knowledge of Parquet or Iceberg data lake architectures.

• Preferred: Experience managing LLMs within real cost and latency constraints in production environments.

• Preferred: Exposure to agentic AI applications, incorporating tool usage, multi-step reasoning, guardrails, and trajectory evaluation.
