This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ukraine.
• Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Ruby (Roda) within a large-scale distributed microservice architecture.
• Contribute to backend-oriented TypeScript/Node.js tasks, including API design and tRPC procedures, supporting Next.js applications.
• Take ownership of service reliability by implementing instrumentation, monitoring, and observability across services (tracing, metrics, structured logging).
• Collaborate closely with data engineers on data pipelines, ETL processes, and ensuring clean and well-structured data flows between services.
• Investigate and resolve production incidents, while contributing to and adhering to on-call/runbook practices.
• Design and enhance APIs with a strong focus on authentication, authorization, and security best practices.
• Engage in code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge-sharing sessions to ensure high-quality, maintainable code.
• Write comprehensive unit and integration tests for backend services.
• Work independently while maintaining clear communication across a distributed, cross-functional team.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 5+ years of professional experience in Ruby backend development; prior experience may include Rails, Roda, Sinatra, or similar – deep knowledge of Roda is not essential as long as you possess strong Ruby fundamentals.
• Experience with distributed systems / microservice architecture.
• Strong working knowledge of observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, or their equivalents – including setting up tracing, metrics, and alerting, rather than just using dashboards.
• Familiarity with error tracking and monitoring tools like Sentry, Honeybadger, or similar.
• Practical experience in TypeScript and Node.js, specifically with Next.js for backend/API-layer work.
• Experience with tRPC or similar typed API frameworks.
• Solid experience with AWS and its core services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, SQS/SNS, ECS/EKS), including infrastructure-as-code using AWS CDK, as well as containerized applications (Docker).
• Experience in designing and evolving APIs, addressing authentication, security, and versioning considerations.
• Experience working within a large distributed system comprising numerous independent services, potentially in different programming languages; capability to quickly acclimate to unfamiliar code and trace a request's path across multiple services end-to-end.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines; we currently use Jenkins and are in the process of migrating to GitHub Actions, so comfort with either, particularly migration experience, is advantageous.
• Proficiency in utilizing AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or similar) effectively to enhance development, debugging, and code understanding.
• Strong communication skills; ability to work independently and take ownership of services from start to finish.
• Capability to communicate effectively with U.S.-based teams and avail yourself for work from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM EEST (11:00 - 20:00).
• Comprehensive health and wellness benefits.
• Flexible working hours and remote work options.
• Opportunities for professional growth and development.
• Collaborative and inclusive work environment.
• Competitive salary and performance-based incentives.
