Senior Backend Engineer, Ruby

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Poland.

📋 Description

• Oversee the development of backend features from initial product discussions through technical design, implementation, deployment, and post-launch evaluation.

• Create workflows, APIs, and data models that support agent-generated work items, implementation plans, durable specifications, and mergeable code.

• Establish evaluation and benchmarking systems to assess workflow quality, token cost, and success rates.

• Construct dependable production systems utilizing Ruby on Rails and Python, along with PostgreSQL, GraphQL, REST, GitLab Duo Agent Platform, LLM APIs, and an AI gateway.

• Collaborate with product teams, designers, engineers, design partners, and users to define scope and make practical trade-offs.

• Manage multi-person projects and communicate decisions effectively in GitLab's asynchronous, fully remote environment.

• Guide engineers and influence technical direction across the Plan group and related AI initiatives.

• Operate in short iterations, share progress via demos, and leverage results and user feedback to inform subsequent steps.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient in Ruby on Rails within a large production codebase and possess production experience with Python.

• Demonstrated ability to lead significant projects involving multiple engineers over several months, achieving clear user or business outcomes.

• A product-oriented mindset with experience overseeing features from concept to completion, including scope definition, trade-off decisions, user engagement, and post-launch learning.

• Full stack background with a current emphasis on backend engineering, along with the capability to comprehend modern frontend code and design effective APIs.

• Strong fundamentals in application programming interface design and structured query languages.

• Experience in exploring development aided by artificial intelligence.

• Ability to work autonomously, collaborate across various functions and regions, and provide support through technical leadership and mentorship.

• Familiarity with GraphQL, PostgreSQL performance at scale, or the construction and evaluation of large language model or agent systems is advantageous but not mandatory.
