Senior Backend Engineer, Ruby – AI Catalog

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Create and develop integrations that incorporate GitLab agents into platforms such as Slack and link external solutions like Claude Code or Codex with GitLab.

• Assume full responsibility for complex features from start to finish.

• Contribute to the development of architectural patterns that define how GitLab offers its AI capabilities.

• Design, implement, and maintain secure, efficient, and thoroughly tested external agent integrations within the GitLab monolith backend.

• Work collaboratively with Product Management, user experience teams, frontend and backend developers, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver high-quality enhancements iteratively.

• Design, implement, and evaluate GraphQL and REST APIs and associated backend logic, ensuring clear contracts for frontend clients.

• Enhance and expand automated testing, including RSpec and other testing frameworks.

• Share best practices, standards, and insights with fellow engineers to facilitate responsible AI integration and evidence-based engineering.

• Engage in Tier 2 on-call rotations, resolve production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and enhance observability and resilience.

• Analyze the competitive landscape and assist GitLab in developing robust AI integrations as agentic technology continues to advance.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building and maintaining production applications using Ruby on Rails, including background jobs, APIs, and data models.

• Comfortable working across the stack within a mature codebase.

• Expertise in designing or extending REST or GraphQL APIs with a focus on scalability, maintainability, and backward compatibility.

• Practical experience in designing and deploying AI-powered backend features or integrations.

• Strong SQL capabilities and familiarity with relational databases like PostgreSQL, including efficient querying and data modeling.

• Experience in identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks at both application and, where applicable, infrastructure levels.

• Willingness to learn, collaborate in an asynchronous and distributed team, and apply transferable skills from related technologies or fields.

• Familiarity with Python backends or Vue frontends is an advantage.
