Senior Backend Engineer – Java

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Report directly to the Vice President of Engineering as an integral member of the R&D team.

• Operate within an AI-first environment utilizing tools like Claude Code to transform product concepts into production-ready systems.

• Play a pivotal role in shaping the technical vision for backend systems.

• Implement features, resolve bugs, and enhance Java Spring microservices.

• Promote the adoption of AI-assisted development practices among the backend engineering team.

• Design systems that are scalable and efficient.

• Validate and take ownership of AI-assisted code.

• Foster technical excellence throughout the team.

• Collaborate through pairing sessions, code reviews, and weekly Friday Dev Chats.

• Mentor and guide junior engineers in software engineering methodologies, design principles, and best practices.

• Collaborate with the product team and feature owners to translate requirements into execution and deployment.

• Support continuous delivery with multiple deployments each day.

⛳️ Requirements

• Must be located in the United States.

• Must be open to working Eastern (EST) time zone hours, regardless of your location.

• Significant experience with Java 17+; ongoing migration towards Java 21.

• Proficiency with Spring Boot 3.x, JPA/Hibernate 6, and SQL relational databases.

• Comfortable writing unit and integration tests while maintaining robust code coverage.

• Experience in designing event-driven microservices.

• Understanding of Domain-Driven Design (DDD), hexagonal (ports & adapters) architecture, and CQRS.

• Comprehensive knowledge of relational databases, including indices, connection pools, ACID transactions, and schema-performance implications.

• Familiarity with NoSQL databases and the ability to discern when to prefer them over relational databases.

• Practical experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar tools.

• Knowledge of agentic/CLI-based AI workflows and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations.

• Experience in applying AI to code review, test generation, and documentation processes.

• Ability to critically assess and refactor AI-generated code for readiness in production.

• Capacity to determine when to utilize AI as opposed to manual implementation.

• BA/BS degree and 8+ years of relevant experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience.

• Experience in Spring/Spring Boot, Hibernate, and relational databases.

• Proven project coordination and management abilities.

• Ability to remain seated for extended periods.
