Senior Backend Engineer, Go

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Poland.

📋 Description

• Develop GitLab’s Git data storage tier utilizing reliable, secure, and efficient APIs and storage operations.

• Take ownership of technical initiatives from the definition of the problem and proposal stage through implementation, rollout, monitoring, and operational follow-up.

• Serve as the primary individual responsible for projects, coordinating with stakeholders, updating on progress and trade-offs, and identifying potential risks.

• Direct the technical design for distributed storage, Git repository management, and address challenges related to performance, reliability, and scalability.

• Collaborate with Git, Infrastructure, Site Reliability Engineering, Dedicated, and customer-facing teams.

• Enhance engineering practices by mentoring, creating documentation, sharing knowledge, conducting design reviews, and performing code reviews.

• Assume operational responsibility, including incident response, post-incident enhancements, capacity and performance assessments, and managing customer escalations.

• Advance automation, reusable designs, dashboards, upstream contributions, and development and testing workflows.

• Address user emergencies, platform alerts, and support requests, including regular on-call responsibilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive professional experience in building, debugging, and optimizing distributed or highly available software systems within large-scale production environments.

• Proven experience managing complex projects from start to finish, encompassing technical design, execution, rollout, and operational support.

• Strong systems design capabilities, with the ability to analyze performance, failure modes, consistency, concurrency, capacity, and observability.

• Demonstrated history of influencing technical decisions and effectively collaborating with stakeholders across various teams and disciplines.

• Experience in mentoring engineers and enhancing designs, code, testing, and documentation processes.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Professional experience with Go or another backend or systems programming language.

• Familiarity with operating production systems and engaging in incident response activities.

• Experience with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC, or Git server infrastructure is highly preferred.
