Senior Backend Engineer, Create – Source Code Experience, Ruby

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Create secure, high-performing features and enhancements utilizing Ruby and GraphQL.

• Transform complex specifications and legacy limitations into straightforward solutions while ensuring system dependability.

• Design and sustain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic that underpin source code workflows.

• Collaborate both asynchronously and synchronously across various functions and teams, involving domain experts as needed.

• Leverage AI coding agents for well-defined tasks and rigorously evaluate their output.

• Write maintainable code that adheres to GitLab standards and promote these standards through code reviews.

• Monitor production health metrics, engage in Tier 2 on-call support, troubleshoot incidents, conduct root cause analyses, and enhance observability and resilience.

• Share knowledge through code reviews, technical documentation, and daily collaboration.

⛳️ Requirements

• Professional experience in developing backend web applications, services, or APIs with Ruby and GraphQL.

• Strong understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and best practices for backend performance.

• Experience in enhancing complex, user-facing workflows and ensuring the reliability and maintainability of underlying systems.

• Proficient in writing backend unit, integration, and acceptance tests.

• Familiar with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review methodologies.

• Experience utilizing AI coding agents to define tasks, review their outputs, and evaluate limitations within a complex monorepo.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

• Ability to influence without direct authority and provide informative status updates in a remote, asynchronous environment.

• Capacity to independently manage priorities, navigate ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance for decisions that are difficult to reverse.
