Senior Backend Developer, Java Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Belgium.

📋 Description

• Design and implement scalable, API-first backend solutions utilizing Java and Spring Boot.

• Convert functional and architectural requirements into robust technical designs.

• Guide and mentor a team of 2–3 backend engineers, advocating for engineering best practices and code quality.

• Contribute to architectural decisions, ensuring a clear separation of concerns, bounded contexts, maintainability, and operational simplicity.

• Produce high-quality, well-tested code through unit, integration, and contract testing.

• Create and develop RESTful APIs and event-driven services in accordance with OpenAPI and AsyncAPI specifications.

• Uphold API governance standards and backend development best practices.

• Build and maintain integrations with third-party systems using JSON, XML, and XSD.

• Design, model, and optimize MongoDB schemas while overseeing database migrations and ensuring transactional consistency patterns.

• Implement secure development practices, including OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and JWT authentication mechanisms.

• Support CI/CD pipelines, trunk-based development, and cloud-native deployment practices using Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.

• Collaborate effectively with architects, business analysts, UX designers, QA engineers, DevOps, and frontend developers in a global environment.

• Actively participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

• Significant professional experience in developing backend applications with Java and Spring Boot.

• Strong expertise in designing scalable, API-first architectures.

• Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor engineering teams.

• Solid grasp of software architecture principles, including separation of concerns and domain-driven design concepts such as bounded contexts.

• Experience in developing RESTful APIs and event-driven architectures.

• Comprehensive knowledge of OpenAPI and AsyncAPI specifications.

• Experience with JSON, XML, and XSD, including resilient integrations with third-party systems.

• Hands-on experience in modeling and optimizing MongoDB databases.

• Familiarity with database migrations and transactional consistency patterns.

• Strong understanding of application security, including OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and JWT.

• Experience with automated testing frameworks, encompassing unit, integration, and contract testing.

• Background in supporting CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery practices.

• Practical experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, and cloud-native application deployment.

• Experience working within Agile/Scrum environments.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills within cross-functional international teams.

• Proficiency in English at B2 level or higher.
