This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.
• Support the month-end closing process and assist in the creation of relevant journal entries.
• Aid in the preparation and upkeep of balance sheet reconciliations.
• Investigate and resolve historical discrepancies in the general ledger.
• Examine payroll, tax, accrual, prepaid, fixed-asset, and liability accounts.
• Assist in the preparation of financial statements and conduct account analyses.
• Provide support in construction accounting, job costing, work in progress, retainage, and related reconciliations.
• Generate audit-ready workpapers and supporting documentation.
• Identify weaknesses in accounting controls and implement improved processes.
• Review payroll tax configurations for employees working in multiple states.
• Investigate state withholding, unemployment, reciprocity, and other employer obligations.
• Register new payroll tax accounts at the state and local levels.
• Address historical filing issues and tax notices through research and resolution.
• Reconcile payroll tax filings, payments, payroll reports, and general ledger accounts.
• Collaborate with the payroll provider to ensure correct tax withholding based on employee work locations.
• Assist in identifying potential historical payroll tax liabilities and facilitate corrective filings or remediation.
• Support the review of multi-state sales tax nexus.
• Research construction sales and use tax obligations by state.
• Determine registration and filing requirements.
• Review documentation for reseller, resale, and exemptions.
• Prepare or review sales and use tax filings.
• Assist in identifying potential historical tax liabilities and support corrective filings or remediation.
• Develop procedures to ensure tax obligations are recognized before project initiation.
• Strong accounting knowledge at the Senior Accountant level.
• Experience with month-end close processes, journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
• Ability to independently investigate unfamiliar accounting and tax matters.
• Experience in payroll tax, sales/use tax, or multi-state compliance.
• Proficient in Excel and capable of handling large datasets.
• Excellent skills in documentation and workpapers.
• Ability to identify root causes of issues rather than merely addressing immediate problems.
• Comfortable engaging with state agencies, payroll providers, CPAs, auditors, operations teams, and leadership.
• Experience in construction accounting is highly advantageous.
• Familiarity with QuickBooks and/or Sage is beneficial.
• Experience utilizing AI tools to enhance accounting research, data analysis, documentation, reconciliations, or process efficiencies is a plus.
• Experience in a CPA firm or public accounting is strongly preferred.
• Bachelor's degree required.
