Program Coordinator – Eastern Europe/Central Asia

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Oversee, document, and report on press freedom and assaults on journalists in the area.

• Initiate, commission, and create daily and long-form reports, videos, and social media content.

• Develop and strengthen relationships with policymakers, regional stakeholders, and journalists.

• Act as a CPJ spokesperson with media outlets, government entities, partner organizations, and civil society.

• Participate in country-level and regional events, forums, and engagements with partners.

• Enhance CPJ’s media networks within the region.

• Launch and support regional collaborations and joint initiatives.

• Formulate and implement advocacy strategies to promote press freedom, including campaigning for the release of imprisoned journalists and seeking justice for journalist murders.

• Assist senior regional leadership in executing regional strategies and priorities.

• Provide daily management and supervision to assigned staff, encompassing delegation, performance monitoring, coaching, and development.

• Compile regular activity reports, updates, and evaluations.

• Monitor hazardous situations and react to emerging threats to reporters alongside the Emergencies team.

• Offer prompt and suitable assistance to journalists facing distress.

• Lead crisis management efforts during urgent or high-risk press freedom situations.

• Collaborate with CPJ’s global Advocacy, Research, and Assistance teams.

• Undertake additional duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

• A minimum of seven years of experience in media or advocacy related to press freedom issues in the region.

• Profound understanding of press freedom issues and the geopolitical landscape of the region.

• Demonstrated ability to analyze political, policy, and freedom-of-expression matters and connect them to press freedom.

• Proven expertise in crafting concise, high-quality reports and accurately summarizing findings and data.

• Proficiency in English and Russian (speaking, reading, and writing).

• Working knowledge of other regional languages.

• Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities.

• Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.

• Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

• Strong time-management abilities and capacity to meet deadlines.

• Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Capacity to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

• Ability to lead a team and collaborate effectively with senior managers.

• Willingness and ability to travel occasionally throughout the region.

• Proficiency in Google Workspace tools.

• Candidate must reside in the ECA region.

• Availability to work and attend meetings according to the US Eastern time zone as required.

• Knowledge of additional regional languages is a plus.

• Strong networks of regional contacts.

• Expertise in online/digital threats, including surveillance.

• Experience in policy development.

• Background in multimedia and data journalism.

• Experience in supporting trauma-related or journalist assistance cases.
