Production Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Oversee the Embedded team, one of the two teams within Production Engineering.

• Guide engineers through essential production challenges such as data protection, safer software modifications, platform reliability, observability, and overload resilience tools.

• Establish trust and influence among engineering leaders beyond your direct reporting line.

• Assist engineers in navigating various technical and organizational landscapes.

• Influence technical decisions and question existing assumptions.

• Define the problem selection, engagement model, success metrics, and operational practices for Embedded.

• Foster an environment where seasoned engineers can excel in their roles.

• Set a clear direction, cultivate psychological safety, offer direct coaching, and enhance the technical and organizational influence of senior engineers.

• Direct the team towards impactful production issues and ensure outcomes are quantifiable.

• Expand the Embedded engagement model while upholding technical standards, coaching quality, and collaborative partnerships.

• Transform engagement insights into reusable engineering practices, patterns, and capabilities.

• Cultivate senior engineers and engagement leads into future technical leaders.

• Work alongside Core to convert broadly applicable concepts into reusable capabilities for Canva.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in leading highly skilled software engineers and technical leads through complex or unclear projects.

• Demonstrated ability in coaching individuals who operate with considerable autonomy.

• Background in software environments where reliability, scalability, and production risk were of utmost importance.

• Proven track record of building trust and authority through influence rather than hierarchical reporting.

• Experience in spearheading significant technical initiatives across multiple teams or departments.

• Ability to persuade teams to alter their software development or operational practices.

• Proficient in communicating complex technical trade-offs to senior stakeholders.

• Skilled at creating an environment conducive to challenge, learning, and direct feedback.

• Strong foundation in computer science principles, including concurrency, multithreading, and data structures.

• Proficiency in languages such as Go, Python, Java, or C++.

• Solid understanding of system internals, networking, and cloud platforms like AWS or GCP.

• Comfortable reasoning through complex, multi-component system issues.

• Strong grasp of system design, architecture, and engineering patterns.

• Familiarity with observability, capacity management, failure modes, and production system operations.

• Experience working in large-scale or high-criticality environments.

• Nice to have: previous management experience in SRE/Production Engineering.

• Nice to have: experience with large-scale storage, CDN, networking, or distributed infrastructure.

• Nice to have: a history of developing senior engineers and technical leads.

• Nice to have: experience in defining the identity, operating model, or scope of a technical function.
