This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Provide support to the Penguin Random House Christian division across WaterBrook, Multnomah, Align Insight, Forum Books, and Image imprints.
• Work on hardcover and trade paperback titles, encompassing hardcover-to-paperback conversions and original works, some featuring 4-color content.
• Report directly to the Executive Managing Editor/Copy Chief.
• Collaborate closely with editorial, design, managing editorial, and production teams.
• Supervise freelance copy editors, cold readers, proofreaders, sluggers, and indexers.
• Offer production editorial expertise from copyediting through to completed printed books and e-pub files.
• Partner with editors and authors to maintain the quality of books starting from the copyedit stage.
• Schedule and allocate freelance editorial assignments.
• Review the work of freelancers and authors’ changes, incorporating corrections into Word documents or Adobe Acrobat PDFs.
• Engage with authors to address queries and ensure that the final products align with expectations.
• Manage a designated list of production editorial tasks, including copyediting, cold reading, and proofreading.
• Maintain books on schedule and free of errors throughout all production phases.
• Ensure adherence to house style and apply The Chicago Manual of Style 18th Edition.
• Review e-pub files prior to finalization.
• Proofread cover copy, jackets, bound galleys, ARE covers, back ads, and reprint corrections.
• Code/tag manuscripts for design, typesetting, and e-pubs.
• Resolve production editorial issues under supervision.
• Create timelines and address project concerns with cross-functional teams.
• Provide constructive feedback to freelancers.
• Perform additional related duties as assigned or required.
• In-depth understanding of Christian theology and Bible scripture is crucial.
• At least 5 years of experience in trade publishing within production editorial, including freelancing.
• Exceptional skills in copyediting and proofreading.
• Strong ability to prioritize tasks in a deadline-oriented environment.
• Excellent time management capabilities.
• Flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing schedules and deadlines.
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style 18th Edition and Merriam-Webster 12th Edition.
• Highly detail-oriented, with strong communication and writing abilities.
• Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, particularly with the track changes feature.
• Skilled in Adobe Acrobat PDF markup.
• Knowledge of FileMaker Pro is an advantage.
• Experience with 4-color art is preferred.
