Principal/Staff Systems Engineer – Safety & Architecture

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Create and uphold system requirements, fault behavior, and performance criteria across hardware and software interfaces.

• Take responsibility for system safety analysis, which includes hazard assessments, safety requirements, FMEAs, fault trees, and evaluations of failures or degraded system performance.

• Drive the development of next-generation architecture and requirements for safety-critical control systems, encompassing safety controllers and emergency stops.

• Convert system and safety requirements into verification strategies and evidence that new functionalities are ready for deployment in the field.

• Ensure that architectural and engineering practices effectively adhere to pertinent safety standards, such as BS EN 17067:2018, BS EN 62745:2017, and ISO 17757:2019.

• Act as a technical consultant for customers, OEM partners, and other external parties regarding system architecture and safety.

• Collaborate across hardware, software, networking, controls, autonomy, and field operations.

• Report directly to the CTO.

• Travel to customer sites, particularly during the initial months of employment.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in electrical, mechanical, systems, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

• Extensive experience in designing or integrating complex, safety-critical electromechanical systems.

• Capability to reason across hardware, software, networking, controls, and physical-machine behavior.

• Proficiency in developing system requirements and interfaces.

• Experience in applying system or functional safety methodologies throughout design, integration, and verification processes.

• Ability to guide cross-disciplinary technical decisions.

• Willingness to engage in hands-on debugging, data analysis, and machine testing as necessary.

• Background in autonomous vehicles, mobile robotics, heavy machinery, aerospace, defense, or other safety-critical cyber-physical systems is highly beneficial.

• Familiarity with functional safety standards such as ISO 17757, ISO 13849, IEC 61508, IEC 62061, ISO 26262, or related frameworks is especially valuable.

• Experience with hands-on certification or third-party safety assessments through organizations such as TÜV or UL is particularly advantageous.

• Background in teleoperation, distributed robotics, or safety-critical networking and communications is particularly valuable.

• Experience with embedded systems, safety controllers, PLCs, CAN/J1939, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or fault injection is particularly advantageous.

• Expertise in robotics perception, localization, planning, control, or autonomy safety is especially valuable.

• Experience operating in off-road or unstructured environments is particularly beneficial.
