Principal Structural Design Engineer – Data Center Infrastructure

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of structural design and analysis for power and cooling systems focused on data centers, which includes frames, enclosures, skids, and mounting structures.

• Conduct and review structural calculations for various load cases, including static, dynamic, seismic, transport, wind, snow, installation, and live loads.

• Ensure that structural designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and jurisdictional requirements for global deployment.

• Lead efforts for seismic qualification, which involves evaluating floor response spectra and determining anchorage requirements.

• Assess floor loading limits, elevated installations, and specific site structural constraints.

• Ensure designs adequately support heavy components such as large bus structures and transformers under both operating and fault conditions.

• Evaluate interactions with forklifts, cranes, and rigging operations throughout the processes of manufacturing, transport, and installation.

• Guarantee that structural intent is precisely represented in CAD models, drawings, and released documentation.

• Review and provide guidance on structural CAD layouts, weldments, fastener strategies, and anchoring details.

• Collaborate with mechanical and CAD teams to align analytical assumptions with the physical design execution.

• Confirm that manufacturing drawings accurately convey load paths, interfaces, and installation requirements.

• Serve as the technical authority for regulatory, AHJ, and customer structural signoff requirements.

• Prepare, review, and certify structural documentation to ensure compliance and customer acceptance.

• Address structural inquiries, findings, and deviations from customers, inspectors, and third-party reviewers.

• Work in partnership with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to recognize and mitigate structural risks.

• Assist in prototype builds, qualification testing, and production ramp-up by providing structural guidance and resolving issues.

• Proactively identify structural risks that may result in redesigns, production delays, or field retrofits.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.

• An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States.

• Over 10 years of experience in structural engineering for industrial or infrastructure-class equipment, with at least 3 years focused on data center design.

• Proven experience in performing and certifying structural analyses for heavy equipment assemblies.

• Ability to independently make structural decisions and provide stamped deliverables when necessary.

• Proficient in structural analysis software such as RISA 3D, SAP2000, RAM Structural, IdeaStatica, Enercalc, Hilti Profis, ETABS, or similar tools.

• Familiarity with ASCE 7, AISC 360, and ACI 318 standards.

• A Master’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university is preferred.

• Structural engineering experience supporting CDU, switchgear, or mission-critical power infrastructure is preferred.

• A comprehensive understanding of ASCE 7 Chapter 13 is preferred.

• Familiarity with CAD (SolidWorks), PLM (Windchill), and BlueBeam is preferred.

• An active Structural Engineer (SE) license in the United States is preferred.

• Practical experience with seismic qualification, anchorage design, and elevated or constrained installations is preferred.

• Experience designing structures that support large bus bar systems, heavy transformers, or other high-mass electrical components is preferred.

• Familiarity with manufacturing and installation interactions, including crane, forklift, and rigging requirements is preferred.

• Experience supporting customer or regulatory structural acceptance and signoff processes is preferred.
