Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Bulgaria.

📋 Description

• Lead the design and execution of Smartsheet's next-generation architecture, ensuring scalability, security, and performance for millions of users worldwide.

• Establish and drive the architectural strategy, making critical technical decisions that will influence the platform's future.

• Review and guide technical project designs, offering feedback during design review sessions to guarantee system resilience and scalability.

• Take responsibility for cross-functional technical initiatives, aligning teams around unified architectural objectives while steering large-scale projects to successful completion.

• Cultivate strong technical leadership by mentoring senior engineers and promoting best practices across various engineering teams.

• Conduct deployment reviews for high-impact projects, verifying they adhere to scalability, performance, and security standards.

• Work closely with product management and other business stakeholders to balance market demands with technical limitations, fostering innovation while upholding technical rigor.

• Champion quality and operational excellence, ensuring systems are monitored, tested, and maintained to achieve the highest reliability standards.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in system architecture and the design of scalable, high-availability systems across various programming languages and frameworks (Python, Go, Java, C/C++, SQL).

• In-depth knowledge of distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and microservices.

• Significant experience in leading large-scale architectural transformations, with the capacity to influence technical direction across multiple teams.

• Proficiency in web application development, data structures, and object-oriented design.

• A proven history of mentoring senior engineers, guiding them through architectural challenges, and ensuring their development into strong technical leaders.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior executives.

• Experience with cloud architectures and large-scale infrastructure, as well as database optimization for performance and scalability.

• Proven ability to work independently, advancing initiatives while aligning with business goals.

• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies, promoting engineering best practices across teams.

• Legally authorized to work in Bulgaria on a continuous basis.

• Proficiency in English is required.
