Principal Generalist Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Design and develop production-quality systems that are dependable, scalable, and easily monitored.

• Take ownership of systems from problem identification through design, data handling, implementation, deployment, and operations.

• Collaborate across application services, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning systems.

• Troubleshoot intricate production issues across various layers.

• Make engineering decisions based on fundamental principles.

• Enhance performance, latency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

• Contribute to the overall architecture and technical strategy.

• Produce maintainable code and comprehensive documentation.

• Elevate the standard of engineering practices.

• Define problems clearly and decide when to implement machine learning as opposed to deterministic approaches.

• Manage data throughout the entire process.

• Train, assess, and refine models.

• Create reproducible data pipelines.

• Deploy models and track their performance, drift, and associated costs.

• Diagnose system and model failures.

• Deliver functional production systems from vague problem statements.

• Construct dependable, scalable systems while minimizing complexity.


⛳️ Requirements

• Strong foundation in computer science principles (data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networking, distributed systems).

• Solid understanding of probability and statistics.

• Experience in developing scalable production systems.

• Ability to work with multiple programming languages (Go, Java, Python, Rust, SQL).

• Knowledge of system performance under load and potential failure scenarios.

• Proficiency with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes.

• Strong troubleshooting capabilities.

• Ability to reason within the framework of invariants and failure modes.

• Familiarity with data systems, streaming technologies, machine learning infrastructure, and performance enhancement techniques.
