Principal Engineer – Product Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Establish the technical vision for key product experiences at 1Password.

• Lead architecture, engineering principles, and technical strategy across the product landscape.

• Ensure that systems remain secure, reliable, high-performing, and maintainable throughout the product's lifecycle.

• Direct long-term architectural investments and set operational standards for teams.

• Advance the product architecture of 1Password, including the integration of AI capabilities.

• Balance the pace of product development with engineering robustness and foster alignment among teams.

• Shape critical architectural decisions regarding distributed systems design and operational resilience.

• Mentor engineers and guide technical leadership within the organization to enhance operational and engineering standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• Designed and managed large-scale distributed systems where reliability, scalability, maintainability, and operational excellence are essential.

• Extensive experience in directing architecture and technical strategy across various teams, organizations, or product areas.

• Strong systems-thinking abilities and capacity to effectively analyze platform boundaries, constraints of distributed systems, developer ergonomics, and long-term technical viability.

• Experience in creating customer-facing product systems spanning clients, APIs, distributed services, cloud infrastructure, and data platforms.

• Hands-on experience in developing or scaling event-driven systems, microservices architectures, or shared platform infrastructure within production settings.

• Practical experience in incorporating AI or ML capabilities into production applications, along with an understanding of the engineering trade-offs related to integrating AI into trust-sensitive product experiences.

• Strong inclination towards privacy-preserving and security-focused system design, including careful management of telemetry, user data, permissions, and auditability.

• Proficient in fostering alignment among teams with differing incentives, priorities, and technical viewpoints.

• Ability to communicate clearly with engineers, executives, and cross-functional partners to articulate complex technical trade-offs in understandable terms.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and assisting organizations in making enduring technical decisions even when all variables are not yet known.
