Principal Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North America.

📋 Description

• Design and implement a high-performance OLAP query engine along with a semantic layer.

• Create a custom JSON-based OLAP query language and establish eBNF grammars.

• Develop a translation layer to convert DSL requests and functional formulas into optimized execution plans.

• Generate and optimize SQL for columnar databases including ClickHouse, SingleStore, and DuckDB.

• Architect multi-dimensional data model representations to facilitate efficient retrieval and aggregation.

• Implement custom function logic and assess SQL push-down versus application-layer execution.

• Design and execute distributed multi-dimensional caching utilizing Redis and shared memory systems.

• Construct and maintain high-performance Java microservices using Micronaut or Spring Boot along with Project Loom virtual threads.

• Oversee connection pooling, array pooling, and off-heap memory management.

• Optimize Java garbage collectors, such as ZGC and Shenandoah, for low-latency performance.

• Utilize AI coding agents and tools throughout the phases of prototyping, development, and debugging.

• Document architectural decisions, design patterns, and technical specifications comprehensively.

• Act as the primary technical authority on the internals of the query engine and guide complex systems-level initiatives.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 15 years of experience in software engineering, concentrating on backend systems and data infrastructure.

• Strong theoretical and practical expertise in compilers, ASTs, eBNF, and query planning.

• Comprehensive understanding of SQL, query optimization techniques, and columnar database internals.

• Expert level proficiency in Java, including aspects of multithreading, asynchronous I/O, networking, and memory management.

• Demonstrated experience in designing distributed caching layers and managing state across microservices.

• Capability to break down complex data challenges into scalable architectural components.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong inclination towards documenting thoughts and architectural concepts.

• Commitment to rigorous software craftsmanship, encompassing testing, telemetry, and performance benchmarking.

• At least 1 year of experience utilizing AI coding agents to boost development productivity.

• Previous experience with ERP, EPM, or General Ledger financial systems is a valuable asset.
