Principal Cloud Engineer – FinOps

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Strategize and implement cloud migration and modernization initiatives with minimal impact on operations.

• Create and enforce scalable, secure, and resilient cloud architectures that meet mission requirements and adhere to federal compliance standards.

• Oversee and manage multi-cloud and hybrid cloud environments across platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, Oracle Cloud, and on-premises infrastructure.

• Design and launch cloud-native applications utilizing Docker, Kubernetes, and microservices architectures.

• Develop and sustain Infrastructure as Code with tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or Pulumi.

• Collaborate with security teams on Authority to Operate processes.

• Provision, oversee, and manage compute, storage, networking, and identity services.

• Monitor cloud environments for performance, availability, and security using tools like Splunk, CloudWatch, or Azure Monitor.

• Integrate automation within CI/CD pipelines through DevSecOps workflows in both classified and unclassified settings.

• Establish and uphold secure, compliant, and repeatable Cloud Landing Zones.

• Assist with enterprise-level account provisioning and tenant management across various cloud platforms and organizational units.

• Engage in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and contribute to sprint planning and execution.

• Apply FinOps cost optimization techniques and assist with billing management and financial governance across cloud tenants.

• Provide customized cloud solutions for Civilian, Federal, DoD, Space, Intel, and Commercial mission partners.

• Offer technical guidance and documentation supporting cloud operations, governance, and best practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree with nine (9) years of experience, or a Master’s degree with seven (7) years of experience.

• Candidates must be U.S. Citizens.

• Candidates must possess the ability to obtain a secret clearance.

• Experience with FinOps KION.

• A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in cloud engineering, architecture, or infrastructure roles.

• Proficiency in at least one major cloud platform: AWS or Microsoft Azure.

• Experience with enterprise-level tenant management and account provisioning across multi-cloud environments.

• Familiarity with DevSecOps pipelines and tools such as GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps.

• Understanding of cloud networking concepts, including VPCs, VPNs, load balancers, DNS, and firewall configurations.

• Familiarity with FinOps practices, cloud billing management, and financial governance across cloud platforms and FinOps tools (Apptio/Kion).

• Strong scripting and automation capabilities in Python, Bash, PowerShell, or comparable languages.

• Preferred: experience in designing and deploying Cloud Landing Zones using AWS Control Tower, Azure Landing Zone frameworks, or equivalent solutions.

• Preferred: knowledge of hybrid cloud connectivity solutions, including AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, and VPN Gateway.

• Preferred: experience supporting or in-depth knowledge of federal or DoD cloud environments at IL2, IL4, IL5, and/or IL6 authorization levels.

• Preferred: demonstrated experience in cloud cost optimization, chargeback/showback models, and FinOps tooling.

• Preferred: experience managing multi-tenant cloud environments and enforcing governance policies across organizational accounts.

• Preferred: familiarity with observability and monitoring tools such as Datadog, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, or CloudWatch.

• Preferred: one or more relevant cloud certifications, including AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Google Professional Cloud Architect, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Architect, HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate, Certified Kubernetes Administrator, or FinOps Certified Practitioner.
