Principal Analyst – Upstream Technologies

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.

📋 Description

• Take ownership and cultivate a distinctive research agenda that encompasses AI, digital twins, cloud computing, edge computing, IoT, industrial data platforms, and automation within the upstream oil and gas sector.

• Engage in primary research with oil and gas operators, technology vendors, and industry experts.

• Generate independent research focused on technology trends, vendor strategies, competitive landscapes, and adoption behaviors.

• Interpret technical advancements into clear business and operational consequences.

• Evaluate digital technologies that aid in exploration, field development, drilling, production optimization, asset reliability, and remote operations.

• Examine deployment requirements, including legacy system integration, IT/OT convergence, data accessibility, connectivity, cybersecurity, and operational resilience.

• Establish and nurture relationships with industry executives and technology providers.

• Provide insights through published reports, advisory sessions for clients, presentations, and participation in industry events.

• Collaborate with analysts from 451 Research and S&P Global energy research teams.

• Facilitate commercial growth by engaging clients through research-led initiatives, sales collaboration, consulting, and custom research opportunities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of relevant experience within the oil and gas industry.

• Familiarity with oil and gas operators, oilfield service companies, technology providers, field experience, or experience as an industry analyst, market researcher, trade publication editor, or journalist.

• Educational or professional background in engineering, computer science, energy studies, business, economics, journalism, or a related field, alongside relevant experience or a demonstrated interest in the oil and gas industry, energy markets, and industry analysis.

• Strong comprehension of upstream oil and gas workflows, including exploration, field development, drilling, production, and asset management.

• Knowledge of AI/ML, digital twins, cloud and edge computing, IoT, industrial data platforms, or automation in the oil and gas sector.

• Capability to evaluate business value and deployment challenges.

• Proficient in conducting interviews and primary research, assessing evidence, and forming independent conclusions.

• Excellent writing and communication skills.

• Ability to simplify complex industry and technology subjects into clear, actionable insights.

• Capacity to independently create a research agenda, manage various deadlines, and cultivate productive relationships.

• Preferred: experience in evaluating or facilitating digital technology deployments within oil and gas.

• Preferred: established connections with oil and gas operators, oilfield service companies, technology providers, and industry experts.

• Preferred: a portfolio of published research, industry reporting, or comprehensive analysis.

• Preferred: experience presenting at industry conferences, briefing senior executives, or providing client advisory services.

• Preferred: familiarity with upstream software and data ecosystems, including subsurface data platforms, operational data integration, industrial AI, and digital twins.

• Preferred: experience utilizing industry datasets, survey research, or financial and market intelligence.

• Preferred: experience collaborating across research disciplines or supporting research-driven commercial engagements.

• Preferred: advanced degree in a relevant technical, business, energy, or industry-related field.
