This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Oversee the technical definition and execution of architectures based on IEC 61850, encompassing data modeling, communication services, and system integration concepts.
• Collaborate with Program and Product Management teams to develop high-level specifications.
• Create and support real-time controller solutions by utilizing design specifications and model-based design that enables code generation.
• Review user specifications and requirements to suggest suitable solutions.
• Examine industry standards and market trends to formulate requirements for proposing new developments in GE Vernova products.
• Partner with Customer Support to address product, process, and customer challenges related to communication protocols.
• Aid in the preparation of training materials and conduct training courses as needed.
• Offer technical guidance, direction, and training to new and/or experienced engineers, specialists, technicians, and co-ops when necessary.
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; a Master’s degree is highly preferred.
• At least 5 years of development experience in protection, control, and automation products for transmission and distribution systems.
• Advanced understanding of substation automation architectures, including bay-level protection and control devices, as well as station-level integration.
• Demonstrated experience using applications for real-time controller platforms in the protection and automation sectors.
• Comprehensive, hands-on knowledge of the IEC 61850 standard, including logical node modeling, data object definitions, naming conventions, and engineering workflows.
• Strong practical experience with IEC 61850 communication services, such as MMS, GOOSE, Sampled Values, reporting, control services, and time synchronization concepts.
• Familiarity with IEC 61850 system engineering, including SCL (ICD, CID, SCD files), system configuration, interoperability, and multi-vendor integration.
• Understanding of IEC 61850-related testing, validation, and conformance practices, including factory and site acceptance testing.
• Detailed knowledge of Ethernet networking, including wired and wireless networks, VLANs, redundancy concepts, and substation switch technologies.
• Awareness of digital communication channels for protection and control systems, including fiber optics, switches, and routers.
• Practical knowledge of cybersecurity technologies relevant to substation automation, including RADIUS, Windows and Unix security administration, Secure Shell, Transport Layer Security, and firewalls.
• Capability to translate utility engineering standards, documentation practices, and operational procedures into product specifications.
• Ability to contribute ideas, work collaboratively in team settings, and adapt to shifting priorities with initiative and ownership.
• Familiarity with GE protection, networking, and substation automation products is a plus.
• Experience with serial SCADA protocols such as DNP3, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-103, and Modbus.
• Practical experience with LAN-based SCADA protocols such as IEC 61850-8-1 (MMS), DNP3/TCP, IEC 60870-5-104, and Modbus TCP.
• Strong working knowledge of MATLAB and Simulink for model-based design, simulation, and algorithm validation.
• Understanding of modern bay controller developments and trends in transmission and distribution automation.
• Familiarity with industry standards and documentation practices of electrical utilities.
• Proven track record of writing and presenting papers at industry conferences.
• Experience in creating applications in the Real Time Controller market.
• Knowledge or experience with wireless, Ethernet, and serial communications applicable to BCU, such as IEC61850, Modbus, DNP3.0, and IEC60870-5-103, -104.
