Power BI Data Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.

📋 Description

• Develop sophisticated dashboards and reports in Power BI that facilitate informed business decisions.

• Create advanced DAX calculations, measures, and calculated columns.

• Design intuitive user interfaces featuring custom visuals, drill-through options, and interactive elements.

• Implement bookmarks, parameters, field parameters, and dynamic formatting.

• Construct composite models utilizing aggregations, incremental refresh, and query folding.

• Design, create, and sustain scalable data pipelines along with ETL/ELT processes using Power Query, Dataflows, and Azure Data Factory.

• Develop and refine star-schema, snowflake-schema, and various dimensional data models.

• Oversee and manage data warehouses and data lakes via Azure Synapse Analytics, SQL Server, or comparable platforms.

• Write and enhance complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and database functions.

• Establish frameworks for data governance, quality checks, validation rules, and documentation standards.

• Configure and manage Power BI/Fabric workspaces, deployment pipelines, and version control systems.

• Implement security measures such as row-level and object-level security.

• Improve report performance through query optimization, data model refinement, and DAX tuning.

• Integrate Power BI with SQL databases, APIs, SharePoint, Excel, and various cloud platforms.

• Automate data refresh schedules and oversee gateway configurations.

• Collaborate directly with end users regarding their requirements, testing, and implementation processes.

• Build comprehensive solutions from inception and take ownership of the entire BI development lifecycle.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years of practical experience in Power BI development (including Desktop, Service, and Report Server).

• Expert-level skills in DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) and Power Query (M language).

• Proficient in SQL with a background in database design, query optimization, and performance enhancement.

• Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling, and ETL methodologies.

• Knowledge of data visualization best practices and UI/UX design principles.

• Proficiency in Azure data services such as Azure SQL Database, Synapse Analytics, Data Factory, or Fabric.

• Comprehensive understanding of data modeling techniques and relationships, including one-to-many, many-to-many, and bi-directional relationships.

• Solid foundation in statistical concepts and analytical methodologies.

• Capability to convert complex business requirements into technical data solutions.

• Experience in data quality assessment and data profiling.

• Demonstrated ability to create visually compelling dashboards and reports for executive-level audiences.

• Strong problem-solving abilities with a hands-on, solution-focused attitude.

• Excellent communication skills for articulating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

• Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to code quality and documentation practices.

• Proven capability to leverage AI and automation in software engineering.

• A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems is preferred.

• Preferred Microsoft certifications include PL-300, DP-203, or DP-500.

• Experience with Python or R for advanced analytics integration is advantageous.

• Familiarity with Git/Azure DevOps for version control and CI/CD pipelines is a plus.

• Knowledge of DAX Studio and other Power BI development tools is preferred.

• Experience with Power BI Embedded or custom API development is desirable.

• Understanding of data science concepts and predictive analytics is preferred.

• A portfolio showcasing impressive Power BI dashboards that reflect design excellence and technical complexity.

• A track record of optimizing underperforming reports and data models.

• Experience mentoring others in Power BI development and best practices.

• Contributions to the Power BI community, such as blog posts, speaking engagements, or open-source projects.
