This is a fully remote position, open to applicants anywhere in the world.
• Identify bottlenecks in live production systems and provide precise characterizations that enable the owning team to take action independently.
• Collaborate closely with database teams (e.g., Multigres, OrioleDB) and infrastructure teams to implement tangible performance enhancements.
• Develop, convey, and refine performance methodologies and tools that transform live production data into actionable insights.
• Work alongside the observability team to capture essential signals and create a unified perspective on platform performance (latency, throughput, tail behavior) across various products.
• Empower teams to conduct self-service performance analysis and elevate performance as a top engineering priority.
• Extensive experience in performance engineering, especially in analyzing the performance of complex distributed systems.
• Ability to traverse the entire stack: tracing a tail-latency issue from the query optimizer through the syscall boundary to the IO scheduler — or across pooler hops, network paths, and availability zones — while interpreting profiles and traces at each layer.
• In-depth knowledge of at least one side of that stack: either Linux kernel internals (virtual memory, scheduling, networking, IO) or database internals (query planning, storage engines, buffer and WAL management).
• Strong understanding of networking and cloud infrastructure performance: TCP behavior under load, network virtualization overhead, and the performance characteristics of AWS components (EBS throughput and IOPS, instance network limits, placement groups, cross-AZ latency).
• Proven track record of translating performance insights into substantial product and architectural improvements — including influencing teams outside your own to prioritize and implement solutions.
• Excellent written communication skills: your problem characterizations are clear, reproducible, and compelling on their own.
• A pragmatic, tooling-focused mindset; comfortable working across product, infrastructure, and database teams.
