Mechanical Design Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Create original, technically sound free-response questions grounded in realistic mechanical and product-design contexts.

• Formulate inquiries that necessitate advanced engineering reasoning while integrating design constraints, manufacturing aspects, tolerances, and engineering trade-offs.

• Design CAD-based mechanical and product-design scenarios encompassing GD&T, tolerance stacks, DFM, drawing creation, review, revision, and release processes.

• Produce comprehensive expert-level solutions detailing assumptions, calculations, design reasoning, methodologies, manufacturability, tolerances, interfaces, and production requirements.

• Assess authored questions against various frontier language models.

• Analyze AI-generated responses for reasoning flaws, design errors, and incomplete technical approaches.

• Adjust problems to sustain an appropriately challenging difficulty level.

• Ensure that problems effectively evaluate advanced mechanical-design proficiency.

• Engage in engineering problem creation, expert solution formulation, technical validation, and AI model assessment.

⛳️ Requirements

• A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related field is mandatory.

• A minimum of 5 years of hands-on professional or industry experience in production design positions.

• Direct responsibility for mechanical designs throughout development and production release phases.

• Strong practical knowledge in CAD and mechanical design.

• Extensive experience with GD&T and tolerance stack analysis.

• Practical understanding of design for manufacturability principles.

• Experience in creating, reviewing, and releasing engineering drawings.

• Excellent technical writing and analytical communication abilities.

• Significant hands-on industry or production design experience complementing doctoral research.

• CSWP or CSWE certification is preferred.

• Advanced CAD skills using professional mechanical design software is advantageous.

• Experience in conducting complex tolerance analyses is a plus.

• Comprehensive knowledge of GD&T standards and drawing practices is desirable.

• Background in collaboration with manufacturing, suppliers, quality, and production teams is beneficial.

• Experience in addressing design-for-manufacturing challenges during product development is advantageous.

• Previous experience in authoring engineering assessments, technical problems, or training materials is a plus.

• Familiarity with AI models or structured technical evaluation processes is a plus.

• Candidates must possess hands-on production-design experience; those whose experience is confined to analysis or simulation without design ownership may not meet the requirements.
