This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Collaborate closely with the client's CDI team, providing support in classroom education and mentoring.
• Ensure the effective transfer of CDI best practices from the consulting team to the client team.
• Facilitate precise documentation concerning severity of illness (SOI) and quality within medical records.
• Engage with physicians, health information management professionals, coding specialists, and nursing staff.
• Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of clinical documentation requirements, coding guidelines, and workflows relevant to both inpatient and outpatient/physician settings.
• Perform thorough inpatient medical record reviews for specified payer populations upon admission and throughout the hospitalization period.
• Act as an educational resource for client CDI teams through classroom instruction, practical teaching, and ongoing mentorship.
• Create and present training sessions for physicians, nurses, coding professionals, and ancillary staff focused on documentation best practices.
• Assess clinical information to pinpoint documentation gaps concerning SOI, POA, MS-DRG, APR-DRG, PSI, and quality measures.
• Develop credible and compliant documentation clarifications.
• Work in tandem with coding teams to ensure the accuracy and completeness of documentation and diagnoses.
• Provide support to clinical staff through regular interaction and coaching.
• Contribute high-quality input for client deliverables and support expert reports.
• Offer interim CDS support as necessary.
• Assist in the creation of CDI and HIM training tools, methodologies, and educational resources.
• Exhibit leadership, manage multiple projects, and contribute to business development and staff development efforts.
• Travel regularly (25%) based on project requirements and client expectations.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline preferred (RN, BSN, RHIA, RHIT, HIM, or similar).
• A minimum of 4-8 years of experience as a CDI specialist, inpatient coder, physician coder, or CDI consultant (or a combination thereof) is required.
• Prior consulting experience is highly preferred.
• Experience across various specialties and care settings; exposure to academic medical centers is strongly preferred.
• Previous inpatient coding experience (ICD10CM/PCS); outpatient/physician coding is a significant plus.
• In-depth knowledge of documentation, coding, and compliance regulations.
• Strong understanding of DRG, MSDRG, APRDRG, and HCC methodologies.
• A desire to advance within the CDI consulting field while collaborating with other IHS service lines is essential.
• A robust ability and enthusiasm for teaching, mentoring, and providing education to clients and internal teams.
• Current CCDS, CCS, or CDIP certification (or the willingness to obtain one) is required.
• RHIA, RHIT, CRC, CPC, or other coding credentials are highly desirable.
• Experience with EMRs such as Epic, Meditech, Cerner, 3M 360, etc.
• Capability to translate clinical and coding concepts into concise, actionable educational content.
• Excellent critical thinking, communication, presentation, and analytical abilities.
• Strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
• Exceptional time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
• A proactive self-starter with the capacity to operate effectively in a dynamic, rapidly changing consulting environment.
