Machine Learning Expert

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop innovative solutions for complex machine learning engineering challenges within a long-term AI research initiative at a prominent AI laboratory.

• Design tasks that are sufficiently difficult to challenge state-of-the-art models, typically solved in no more than 2 out of 8 attempts.

• Emphasize primarily on inference, evaluation, and systems work rather than extensive model training.

• Create a combination of tasks that utilize both GPU and CPU resources.

• Clearly articulate the reasons behind the difficulty of each problem for a frontier model.

• Contribute ideas without the need to construct or assess the tasks.

• Engage in projects that train and enhance AI systems through partnerships with top AI labs and enterprises.

⛳️ Requirements

• Current or recent experience in a role as an ML research engineer, research scientist, or applied scientist.

• Practical experience in training, fine-tuning, or optimizing models using PyTorch or JAX.

• Extensive knowledge in at least one of the following areas: LLMs (pretraining, alignment, evaluations); GPU inference and performance (vLLM, Triton, CUDA, profiling); reinforcement learning; or scientific ML related to weather and climate, physics, or biology.

• Capability to explain the complexities of problems for frontier models.

• Experience in crafting benchmark or evaluation questions is beneficial.

• A PhD in ML, CS, or physics, or an MSc with a strong research output is preferred.

• Publications in relevant fields are advantageous.

• Previous Mercor contracts with a strong performance record are a plus.

• This is an independent contractor position.

• Candidates must not require H-1B or STEM OPT support.
