Legal Intern, Unpaid – Academic Credit Eligible

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Perform legal research on issues concerning FASD and the criminal justice system (such as competency, Miranda rights, sentencing, diversion, and disability accommodations).

• Identify and summarize pertinent case law, statutes, and emerging legal trends.

• Assist in the preparation of legal briefs, memoranda, and issue summaries.

• Aid in the research and drafting of amicus curiae briefs.

• Gather supporting evidence, citations, and interdisciplinary research (legal and clinical).

• Monitor relevant appellate and post-conviction cases that involve FASD-related matters.

• Contribute to the creation of training materials for legal professionals (judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors, and law enforcement).

• Help develop fact sheets, legal guides, and presentation materials.

• Translate complex legal and clinical concepts into understandable formats.

• Assist in the preparation of materials for the Justice Advisory Committee (including agendas, summaries, and research briefs).

• Support the coordination of subject-matter experts and contributors.

• Engage in internal discussions and provide insights when appropriate.

⛳️ Requirements

• Currently enrolled law student (1L, 2L, or 3L) in good academic standing.

• Excellent legal research and writing abilities.

• Interest in fields such as criminal law, juvenile justice, disability law, public defense, prosecution, or public policy.

• Capability to synthesize complex information across various disciplines.

• Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

• Coursework or experience in criminal law, evidence, constitutional law, or disability rights (preferred).

• Interest or experience related to FASD, neurodevelopmental disabilities, or behavioral health (preferred).

• Familiarity with legal databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) (preferred).
