This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Assess and make underwriting decisions on life and critical illness insurance applications with approval limits up to $10 million.
• Collaborate with designated underwriters on intricate, high-value, or development-centric files.
• Evaluate underwriting strategies, evidence requested, documentation, decision-making rationale, and the impact on customers/advisors.
• Provide training, coaching, and mentorship to underwriters.
• Cultivate forward-thinking underwriting capabilities utilizing digital tools, AI-driven decision support, data analytics, and ongoing enhancement.
• Encourage consistent adherence to underwriting guidelines, financial and medical underwriting principles, and risk management practices.
• Assist underwriters in comprehending business implications, including requirement ordering, amendments, advisor communication, cycle times, customer experience, persistency, and competitive positioning.
• Efficiently manage co-signing and underwriting tasks while upholding service standards and timely decision-making.
• Offer constructive feedback through case discussions, coaching sessions, office hours, and file evaluations.
• Work in partnership with underwriting leaders, Risk Management, Research, medical directors, and new business teams.
• Identify enhancements to underwriting processes, documentation, training, requirement ordering, and tool utilization.
• Engage in case clinics, coaching sessions, office hours, and training initiatives.
• At least 5 years of experience in life and critical illness underwriting.
• Proven ability to manage complex and high-value cases effectively.
• Strong understanding of life and critical illness underwriting, including medical, financial, non-medical, product, and persistency aspects.
• Demonstrated capability to mentor, coach, and develop fellow underwriters.
• Excellent analytical, judgment, and problem-solving abilities.
• Capacity to evaluate risk, challenge assumptions, and apply guidelines within a sound business context.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to articulate complex decisions in a clear and constructive manner.
• Proficiency in underwriting technology, digital tools, data insights, and AI-enabled decision support.
• Openness to assist others in adopting new methodologies.
• Ability to exemplify collaboration, curiosity, accountability, adaptability, and continuous improvement.
• A bachelor’s degree in finance, business, health sciences, or a related field is preferred.
• Professional underwriting designations or progress toward FALU, FLMI, ACS, or equivalent credentials are highly desirable.
