Lead Substation Structural Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Oversee and assist with engineering and design for substations, switchyards, and various electrical infrastructure projects.

• Conduct engineering calculations and create analytical models for structural steel and concrete design.

• Collaborate with Project Engineers and Project Managers to establish workload forecasts, design timelines, and budgets for civil/structural work activities.

• Spearhead the development of task and effort estimates for proposal assistance.

• Contribute to the business development strategy focused on substation and high-voltage electrical infrastructure.

• Direct the civil/structural design team and oversee the completion of engineering drawings.

• Work collaboratively across disciplines on general arrangements, vendor procurement packages, and other related deliverables.

• Develop, update, and enforce group-specific standards.

• Create technical reports and presentations to communicate research, findings, and recommendations.

• Draft project technical specifications and contract documents.

• Review and verify work produced by peers and the team.

• Travel occasionally to various AECOM locations and client sites.

• Support AECOM’s Energy Practice’s Power Delivery Initiative.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline, along with 8 years of relevant experience or a proven equivalency of experience and/or education.

• Proven experience in structural design for power delivery infrastructure.

• Familiarity with substation projects.

• Possession of a P.E. license.

• A minimum of 10 years of experience is preferred.

• Extensive knowledge of industry codes and standards, including NESC, G.O.95, ASCE 113, ASCE 10, ASCE 48, IEEE 605, IEEE 693, AISC 360, ASCE 7, IBC, ACI 318, RUS, ASCE design guidelines, and NEC.

• Demonstrated involvement in complex, multi-discipline programs/projects and CAD teams.

• Experience executing tasks in 3D model environments.

• Skilled in modeling, analyzing, and designing steel structures and foundations.

• Structural design experience for both overhead and underground transmission and distribution systems.

• Familiarity with voltage levels such as 4kV, 12kV, 138kV, 230kV, and 500kV.

• Proficient in AutoCAD.

• Experienced with structural analysis and design software, including Staad.PRO, SAP2000, MFAD, and L-Pile.

• Ability to work effectively with remote teams.

• Experience on full EPC and Design/Build projects from inception to completion.

• Experience in Owner’s Engineering.

• Familiarity with retrofit or brownfield projects.
