
Lead Engineer, Thermal Systems – Mechanical Loop

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina.
• Spearhead the creation of multi-generational system roadmaps for the mechanical loop, with an emphasis on AI data centers of diverse scales.
• Act as an internal authority on advanced cooling and heat rejection technologies, including thermal management, and their integration into system architecture design.
• Collaborate with partners such as NVIDIA to ensure that thermal solutions align with the requirements of future chip architectures (e.g., DSX2 and beyond).
• Convert customer needs into comprehensive technical specifications for equipment and controls teams.
• Oversee the design of the mechanical loop thermal management system within both current and future reference design architectures.
• Propel innovation by assessing and incorporating new cooling technologies and components into our system reference designs.
• Partner with the Sustainable Design Lead to establish and meet sustainability targets (PUE, WUE) for mechanical systems.
• Offer coaching, mentorship, and technical support to junior engineers and cross-functional team members, nurturing a culture of knowledge sharing.
• Represent the company in industry standards organizations such as ASHRAE and the Open Compute Project (OCP) to shape the future of data center design.
• Expect overnight travel of 5 – 15% based on assigned projects, with the possibility of some international travel.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• A minimum of 7-10 years of engineering experience, with a relevant current focus on thermal system management for data center cooling.
• Demonstrated experience in designing mechanical cooling systems for mission-critical facilities, preferably data centers.
• Extensive knowledge of chiller plants, pumping systems, cooling towers, and air handling systems.
• Strong capability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners.
• Ability to excel in a fast-paced and dynamic environment serving mission-critical clients.
• An engineering background in data center/high-tech design is mandatory.
• Familiarity with PLC controls is an advantage.
• Experience with onsite power generation and/or backup power distribution is a plus.
• Desired knowledge of HVAC products, components, and systems.
• Strong background in thermal/fluid energy and/or controls is advantageous.
• Excellent technical skills coupled with a natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and developing new competencies.
• Technically innovative yet practical and grounded in real-world feasibility.
• Capable of conducting thorough and objective analysis.
• Proficient in collaborating with and influencing others.
• Self-motivated and disciplined.

• Proficient in speaking and writing in English.
• Competent in using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
