This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Take charge of the relationship between the design system and production code.
• Create and sustain reusable components, design tokens, and shared foundations across iOS, Android, and Web platforms.
• Convert high-fidelity designs into production-ready components with outstanding visual fidelity.
• Collaborate with Engineering to establish a component architecture that is scalable, flexible, efficient, accessible, and easily adoptable.
• Enhance design-to-code workflows through tools, automation, documentation, and an improved developer experience.
• Develop systems that boost speed while ensuring quality and consistency are upheld.
• Strengthen governance regarding component APIs, tokens, naming conventions, versioning, and adoption.
• Review implementations and pinpoint opportunities to enhance both the design system and product quality.
• Investigate and construct AI-driven workflows for designing, building, documenting, and maintaining products.
• Contribute to the future direction of product development at Step.
• Collaborate with Product Design and Engineering leadership to advance Step’s design platform and minimize product development friction.
• Report directly to the Head of Design.
• Extensive experience in building and refining design systems for modern consumer software applications.
• Strong frontend engineering expertise in creating reusable component libraries and design infrastructure.
• In-depth knowledge of design tokens, component architecture, accessibility, documentation, and contemporary design system best practices.
• Solid understanding of Figma and current design-system workflows.
• Systems-thinking mindset towards enhancing product development workflows.
• Exceptional attention to visual detail.
• Proven ability to work effectively with designers and engineers.
• Strong communication skills and the capability to influence technical and product decisions across various disciplines.
• A keen interest in AI and emerging design tools.
• Experience in delivering high-quality mobile or web applications.
• A portfolio or work samples that showcase technical execution and design systems thinking.
• Preferred experience with React Native or cross-platform component libraries.
• Preferred background in building token pipelines or design system tools.
• Preferred experience with Storybook or similar documentation platforms.
• Preferred experience in developing Figma plugins or internal developer tools.
• Preferred experience in utilizing AI to enhance design workflows or develop design tools.
• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
