Lead Design Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop systems that enhance the capabilities of Samsara’s products and expand the influence of the design team.

• Establish components, patterns, tokens, and guidelines for both human users and AI agents.

• Collaborate in design and coding to deliver highly interactive user interfaces for web and mobile platforms.

• Formalize principles, heuristics, and quality benchmarks for AI-generated content.

• Create essential system components, evaluations, and feedback mechanisms for AI design and code generation.

• Oversee design quality and ensure that subpar AI outputs do not reach customers.

• Convert system decisions into maintainable and efficient code.

• Integrate accessibility, responsiveness, and performance as fundamental aspects of the system.

• Develop models for contribution, governance, and deprecation.

• Engage with system users to gather feedback and usage insights.

• Distribute effective AI tools, workflows, and strategies among design and engineering teams.

• Advocate for Samsara’s cultural values as the organization expands globally.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in design engineering, design systems, product design, or front-end engineering, focusing on UX/UI for web and mobile applications.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction Design, or equivalent practical experience.

• Experience in delivering design systems or component libraries.

• A portfolio, case studies, or code samples that illustrate the projects completed, decisions made, and team adoption; applications without a portfolio will not be considered.

• Strong skills in interaction and visual design.

• Familiarity with design tokens, theming, and accessibility standards.

• Regular use of AI tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Figma Make, with demonstrable work attributed to these tools.

• Experience in integrating AI tools with a design system.

• Capable of explaining, reviewing, and troubleshooting AI-generated code.

• Proven experience collaborating with designers, engineers, and product managers on short development cycles.

• Legal authorization to work at Samsara and in the specified work location.
