Lead Design Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Develop systems that enhance the functionality of Samsara’s products and amplify the impact of the design team.

• Establish components, patterns, tokens, and guidelines for both human users and AI agents.

• Engage in both design and coding, delivering highly interactive user interfaces for web and mobile platforms.

• Formulate principles, heuristics, and quality benchmarks for AI generation.

• Create essential system components, evaluations, and feedback mechanisms to refine AI design and code generation.

• Oversee design quality to ensure that subpar AI outputs do not reach customers.

• Convert system decisions into maintainable and efficient code.

• Integrate accessibility, responsiveness, and performance into the system as default features.

• Define models for contribution, governance, and deprecation.

• Collaborate with designers and engineers, utilizing feedback and usage data to inform future projects.

• Distribute effective AI tools, workflows, and strategies among design and engineering teams.

• Advocate for Samsara’s cultural principles as the company expands globally.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in design engineering, design systems, product design, or front-end engineering, focusing on UX/UI for web and mobile applications.

• Experience in delivering design systems or component libraries.

• A portfolio, case studies, or code samples that detail what was created, the decision-making process, and how teams implemented the work; applications lacking a portfolio will not be considered.

• Proficient in interaction and visual design.

• Familiarity with design tokens, theming, and accessibility best practices.

• Regularly utilize AI tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Figma Make, with demonstrable work linked to these tools.

• Background in connecting AI tools with a design system.

• Capability to explain, review, and troubleshoot generated code.

• Experience working collaboratively with designers, engineers, and product managers on short cycles.
